CLS interactive Talk on Language and Gender Sensitivity in Academia
The Center for Language Studies (CLS) organized an interactive Talk titled “গ’তে গালি, ফ’তে ফেমিনিস্ট: Addressing language and gender sensitivity in academia” in PD 110 at the ULAB Main Campus on 1 August 2023. Presided by the Director of CLS Dr. Faheem Hasan Shahed, the session was conducted by author-researcher-activist Owakila Tabassum Mumu.
In front of a full-house audience of students and faculty members of various departments, Ms. Owakila narrated the numerous psycho-social and professional issues related to gender sensitivity that negatively overwhelm the attitudes of both males and females. She explained with realistic examples how this leads to a patriarchal mindset that eventually victimizes both males and females. And since language is a prime aspect of our attitudes, our daily utterances reflect such patriarchy. The Speaker showed how these gender sensitivity issues are neglected in various academic disciplines. The event witnessed spontaneous, critical reflections from both students and teachers that made it very lively.
